85 years ago: Marion Massacre

October 2, 1929:  Angry at poor conditions and poor pay workers at Marion Manufacturing set up a picket line at the plant's front gate at shift change. The McDowell County sheriff and his deputies lobbed tear gas to disperse them. Gunfire erupted, leaving 25 mill hands wounded, six of them fatally, in one of the bloodiest textile strikes in N.C. history.

After an investigation, hearing and trial the Sheriff and deputies were found not responsible for the deaths.

Here is a pictorial look at the first few days of coverage in the Charlotte Observer.

I guess throughout history the police have always been innocent in any shooting. The more things change the more they stay the same.
