Recipes, 1966

Eudora Garrison was the Observer's food editor in the '50s and '60s.

Here are just a few of the recipes she ran in May, 1966.

My mom used to make tuna casserole and called it 'Tuna David' after our last name.
Gave it a little glamour, LOL!

Prunes 'n sour cream. The misunderstood dessert.

I hope the Davises had a nice honeymoon...

The crabmeat canapes have my attention more than the chicken...

The topmost clipping really brings back a pleasant memory in the form of the ad for Family Bootery. I am now 61 years old and a native of Charlotte. My first job was at the Family Bootery on Central Avenue which I started three days prior to my 16th birthday in December of 1969. Mr. John Lawless was the owner, a friend of our family, and ran the store with a tight rein. He taught me a lot about being an adult, taking responsibility, learning how to deal with the public and so much more. He had been a captain in the US Army directly under Gen. Patton and was a soldier's soldier apparently. The ad spurs additional memories because, after I had been there about a year, he turned the composition of the ads over to me for pasteups and design to submit to The Observer. Thanks for the memory!

Walter - what a great comment! It makes my day when the blog brings back good memories, and isn't it funny how the peripheral stuff on a page is more interesting than the subject? Tx for reading and Happy New Year! Maria
