All kinds of doings around town in October of 1946!
Oooh, if the Red Devil loses he will shed his mask!
Anybody know what type of fund-raiser the 'Community Chest' was?

So is the Dicky Spangler in the picture from Alexander Graham Junior High that same as Clemmie Spangler, a very successful businessman? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clemmie_Spangler
Maria is the Observer's archivist and research librarian. When she's not helping reporters connect the dots she's doing what she really loves: unearthing forgotten gems from microfilm and the paper's photo files.
Maria grew up in a small colonial town in NJ which sparked her love of history.

I believe that the 'community chest' is the precursor to the "united way". An early version of the United Way.
Blake - I bet you're right that 'Dickie' in Clemmie Dixon Spangler. Good catch, and thanks for the comment and link!
Anon 9:19 - that makes sense! Many thanks.
