Roman Candles and Bottle Rockets

I know it's tempting to go to SC for July 4th fireworks but you'd better not! Here's a distraction to keep us out of trouble.

Photographer's notes: 'Opal Phillips, owner of Andy's Fireworks on Cherry Road in Rock Hill with one of what she says is a top seller for the Fourth of July season... called artillery shells ...a ball on a long fuse that you light and drop down a tub to be shot off.' 1988.

'Sky Lights: It was the Fourth of July a month and a half early Wednesday night as a fireworks display, sponsored by WBCY radio, lighted the Charlotte sky. The show followed the Goody's Pole Day Parade of Lights as part of the pre-World 600 celebration.' 1985.

July 1, 1959. No other info but the patch on his sleeve appears to say 'Mecklenburg County Police'.

'Fort Pedro on U.S. 301 ... 'Fireworks Capital of the U.S.' '1976.

1961 staff photo. Is the boy wearing a Boy Scout neckerchief?

Only a fuddy-duddy New Jerseyan would have such an attitude.

We in South Carolina grow up with fireworks and we have great fun with them.

(Too bad North Carolinians can't loosen up on this issue.)
